Dear fellow internet
searcher,
My name is Simon Hill. I've been using the internet since the early 2000s and have been fortunate enough to have learnt how to use Google to uncover many things that probably were not meant to be found on the internet.
I started experimenting with the different syntax commands that Google offers and began my journey finding content that was buried within the everyday results that Google returns, After showing a few friends they also wanted to understand the commands to help narrow down their search results. Now there is help out there, many books and websites have information on how to use these commands but I wanted to create something that made it easy for my friends to use so I created GGrab.
One of my friends started using GGrab and quickly uncovered a large number of CV's stored on a web server which should not have been available to the general public, he sent an email to the recruitment company and advised them of the issue and the fact that the data was probably in breach of the Data Protection Act.
The response is below, it turns out that the I.T Administrator the company had been using had left and he had not correctly secured the directory where CV's were uploaded to, Google had come along and indexed the files plus exposed this information to anyone who knew the correct commands to find them.
Hello Paul,
I have managed to find that permissions were set wrongly on the cv folder on the
server and have sent this to the server team for correction.
Many thanks indeed for informing us about this issue.
All the best
